Victory in Springfield: Physician Assisted Suicide Bill Dead at End of Session

We have big news to share!

Illinois Right to Life Action, alongside the Stop Assisted Suicide Coalition—including the Illinois Catholic Conference, Access Living, and many other pro-life organizations, disability rights advocates, and medical professionals—successfully fought off Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) this session.

And we didn’t do it alone—we did it with YOU.

From calling your legislators to filing thousands of witness slips, this victory could not have been accomplished without your dedication and voice. We give glory to God.

This is huge.

The Illinois Legislature tried everything to pass this horrendous bill that would legalize physician assisted suicide in our state.

Identical bills were introduced in both the House and the Senate. When the bill stalled in the House, proponents attempted a legislative sleight of hand: they amended a FOOD SANITATION BILL, removing its original content and inserting assisted suicide language instead. That maneuver advanced the bill to the House floor, where it was passed.

However, the Senate did NOT agree to the new language (did not concur)—and so, the bill died.

What This Victory Means

We know that PAS will rear its ugly head again. But this moment is meaningful: it signals that our legislature knows their constituents do not want this for Illinois.

Your voices were heard. And now, we must prepare for the next battle to protect the elderly, the disabled, and the vulnerable from the coercive pressures associated with legalized physician-assisted suicide.
