Development of the Child In the last few decades, we have seen technological advancements surpass all expectations. Embryologists and scientists have accomplished such powerful neo-natal technology in fetology that it is possible to view and record the intricate details of the reproductive process and the generation of new life. It has been scientifically proven that human life begins at conception about nine months before birth. Since that discovery, all studies have reaffirmed the fact that prior to birth, the human embryo is not merely a "blob of tissue," but a unique human life entitled to equal protection under the law and possessing an inalienable right to life. Yet despite these unrefuted facts, abortion is legal up to the last month of pregnancy in this country. Here's a look at the growth and development of an unborn baby in his first stages of life. 1st DAY At fertilization, a new child begins human development with his own unique genetic blueprint different from that of both his mother and his father. As the baby begins the continuum of life on DAY 1, the child's sex, eye and hair color, height and skin tone have been decided. 21st DAY The baby's heart begins to beat. 35th DAY Fingers of the hand are visible. 40th DAY The baby's brain waves can be detected and recorded. 8th WEEK The baby has developed 40 muscle sets that function with the nervous system. 10th WEEK The uterus has doubled in size. 12th WEEK The baby wakes and sleeps and exercises, moving about and breathing amniotic fluid to strengthen his developing respiratory system. 5th MONTH The baby reacts to a loud startling sound by jumping in the mother's womb. 7th MONTH The four senses of vision, hearing, taste and touch are developed. The baby can recognize his mother's warm presence and her soft voice. 9th MONTH The baby's heart is pumping 300 gallons of blood per day and weighs six to nine pounds. He is fully capable of living outside his sanctuary for the first nine months of life, the womb.
