The Netherlands' Death Wish

Back in November, the Dutch parliament passed a law formally legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide. Euthanasia, or "mercy killing," had been tacitly legal for 20 years in the Netherlands, but prosecutions of some doctors propelled advocates to push for full legalization. According to Catholic World News/ EWTN, under the new law, a patient will be able to make a written request for euthanasia, giving doctors the right to use their own discretion when patients become too physically or mentally ill to decide for themselves.

(Many times, doctors in the Netherlands have taken matters into their own hands. Dr. John Willke tells a story about a cancer patient who was euthanized because the hospital needed the bed!)

Euthanasia advocates will not stop there; they want to allow children as young as 12 to demand their own death and to allow people who are "tired of life" to also ask their doctors to kill them.

The Vatican quickly condemned the new law, describing it as, "a law that violates the dignity of the human person."
