On Sunday, April 25th, abortion supporters are scheduled to appear in Washington,
D.C. for the so-called March for Womens Lives. This title attempts to suggest that
legal abortion is safe (it is certainly not), and that banning abortion would
lead to women dying from illegal abortion.
Dr. Bernard Nathanson, co-founder of
NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), but now a defender of life, has debunked
the statistics cited about deaths from illegal abortion. While the actual number of
such deaths was 39 in 1972, NARAL was claiming that over 5000 women died each year from
illegal abortions. Nathanson admitted that NARAL fabricated this
statistic for political gain.
Is "legal" abortion safe for
women? "Legal" abortion was certainly not safe for the millions of
women who now regret their abortions. Nor was
"legal" abortion safe for the nearly 23 million unborn women who have been
aborted since 1973.
And how can abortion
supporters seriously claim abortion is a safe medical procedure? Recent administrative rulings in abortion cases
have declared perforation of the uterus "a known and common complication of an
abortion" (Florida) and death after a second trimester abortion "normal, because
these complications are expected with this type
of abortion" (Michigan). In both
these cases, the abortionist was declared to have no responsibility for the bad outcome of
those abortions. Apparently, the word
safe has been redefined to mean that the abortionist is safe from
prosecution! Calling Sunday's pro-abortion event a "March for Women's
Lives" is clearly a misnomer.
Many women who regret their abortions are
becoming brave enough to speak about those regrets. Some
of them will even be going to Washington to share their message of regret with
pro-abortion marchers on April 25th. At least
three organizations are working to share the truth with pro-abortion marchers. The Silent No More Awareness Campaign is bringing
together women who regret their abortions. Operation
Witness, under the leadership of Randall Terry, has secured sidewalk space along eight
blocks of the pro-abortion march route to allow a variety of truth-filled Pro-Life
messages to be proclaimed. The Christian
Defense Coalition is also attempting to obtain space for a Pro-Life presence, but the
National Park Service is denying their right to obtain that space.
Now that the leaders of the pro-abortion
march have invited anti-war and anti-IMF (International Monetary Fund) protesters to
bolster their numbers, the National Park Service must be getting nervous about the
potential of violence and rioting. The
anti-war and anti-IMF groups have a history of causing serious trouble. They present a real danger to the Pro-Life truth
teams that will appear along the march route.
Some threats have already been expressed
publicly, suggesting that those interested in violence should direct these tendencies
toward Pro-Lifers. One suggestion given was
to use paint to destroy Pro-Life signs. Now that organizers have extended an
invitation to these violent, radical groups to participate in their march, even
calling it a pro-abortion march is misleading. The common cause shared among the
marchers will be anti-Bush rather than pro-abortion.
