Peer counseling sponsored by Planned Parenthood

Research readily reveals:

Peer Counseling sponsored by
Planned Parenthood

Searching the Internet for information about "peer counseling" reveals that Planned Parenthood is using this strategy to reach teenagers for purposes of marketing their immoral philosophies about human sexuality and ultimately to generate more revenue from teenagers who then "need" their "products" (birth control, STD testing and treatment, pregnancy tests, and abortion).  Some of the evidence of Planned Parenthood’s program is presented here.

Peer Advocates/Amigos Positivos - Junior High & High School

Peer Advocates/Amigos Positivos is an award-winning peer education program offered in local junior and senior high schools and sanctioned by Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The curriculum has been board approved and implemented in schools for over twenty-five years. The goal of this comprehensive series is to provide students with current information that impacts their daily lives, develops stronger decision making abilities, and encourages healthy communication and life skills so that participants can be a resource to friends, classmates and family members.

Students are recruited through self, peer and counselor referral, and must have a signed permission slip by their parent/guardian and teachers. The students complete 14 interactive and empowering lessons on self-esteem, decision-making, family and relationship communication, puberty, sexual health, HIV/AIDS and other current topics. Participants are taught when to seek adult guidance and when to refer peers for professional assistance. Upon completion of the beginning level Peer Advocates program, participants are eligible for Advanced Peer Advocates. This includes additional training in peer counseling and exposure to community leaders and role models. Students are required to complete homework and field assignments, which include taking care of the infant simulator, Baby Think It Over, and visiting local social services agencies.

Peer Advocates participants may also serve as Planned Parenthood interns and volunteers; participate on teen panels, radio programs, health fairs and tabling events; and attend professional conferences. Participation in the Peer Advocates program increases the knowledge and skills of the participants, improves family and relationship communication, and assists both the participants and their peers in managing the challenges of everyday life.

Peer education*, with its grounding in social learning theory, draws upon the resources and existing social networks of young people to engage them in disease and pregnancy prevention among their peers. Peer education is experiencing a boom in popularity as programs are established in schools and universities, clinics, youth serving organizations, community based groups, and religious institutions.

In 2007, UHPP community educators and high school peer educators provided 334 programs reaching over 3,000 youth in grades K-12. Additional programming was provided to college students, parents and youth-serving professionals. Planned Parenthood providers and educators see firsthand the price that young people pay when they are denied access to medically accurate, comprehensive sex education that could help them protect their lives and their futures.

Davis Andrew, 16, was among those performing. He's part of a new all-male peer-counseling program sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando.   "We're trying to stop all the young people from going out and risking their lives from unprotected sex," the Evans High School student said.

Smart talk from the ‘sex ed girl’

Andreina Cordova has a 15-minute window to change a life, just a few moments between the dismissal of classes and the beginning of soccer practice.  She wants to speak to anyone who will listen – about making smart decisions about sex.

She plunges into the throng of students on the sidewalk outside King/Drew Magnet High School of Science and Medicine.

She has memorized pages and pages of information on sex education and sexually transmitted diseases. She’s ready to pass out cards from Planned Parenthood, listing services and clinics. She is also armed with condoms.

Andreina is 15. She’s been attending Planned Parenthood sex education events since the age of 13. She had just finished eighth grade when she became one of the youngest students ever hired to be a peer advocate in a program whose goal is to reduce teen pregnancy and STD rates.

Mann has been employed by Planned Parenthood since he was 15. He counsels teens who want to talk to someone their own age, and dispenses information about birth control and the different options available to pregnant teens. In the two years he has worked for Planned Parenthood, he has done everything from clinic escorting to counseling teens on HIV and AIDS.

Peer outreach educators are constantly being trained in the Planned Parenthood philosophy, and are then encouraged to present it in their own way. Mann stresses the need to be detached and objective when dealing with patients. "Basically, one of the rules when you become an educator is that when you walk through the doors at Planned Parenthood, or when you have a contact, you leave your personal feelings behind and you have a professional attitude." Mann says you will never hear an educator say, "If I were you, I'd do this," or "You should do this," because it is not their job to make those decisions.

Peer counseling is a technique which has been used effectively and extensively in sexuality values clarification by Planned Parenthood affiliates and others. In such an approach, teenagers are trained to become knowledgeable about the emotional and factual components of reproductive health, and to serve as leaders in listening and giving advice to peers about sex.
