March for Life Eyewitness Report My wife Nancy and I attended this years March for Life in Washington, D.C. on January 22nd. Experienced marchers that we talked to came to the same conclusion we did this was a very large turnout, likely the largest ever, estimated at over 300,000. March for Life organizer Nellie Gray said the march normally takes about one and a half hours to pass one point, but this year it took over two and a half hours. Using that benchmark, attendance may have reached an astounding 375,000, compared to last years 225,000. That would definitely make it the largest March for Life ever. Both weather for the Noon rally and the march to the Supreme Court building, as well as travel conditions to get there, were ideal. The day was sunny with a temperature reaching the low 40s. There was no snow on the ground. Actually, the National Mall ground was dusty. Signs placed on the ground even for a moment picked up dust like a magnet. Many remember standing on ice and snow in previous years with concern of falling down at any moment, and toes getting very cold. A little dust was much better! The rally speakers included organizer Nellie Gray, many Congressmen, some eloquent ministers, and other special guests, including a woman who helped found Silent No More to support women in expressing the damage abortion has done to their lives, including her own. Coverage of the March for Life was less than ideal, reflecting the rather obvious bias of the media, but USA Today and Fox News had reasonably good coverage. In Chicago, both the Tribune and Sun-Times carried articles, quite an improvement from the total shutout of recent years. Bill Beckman
Death is the Politically Correct Solution The slippery slope is as slick as black ice on the roads this winter. A Montana judge has ignored typical judicial convention and refused to enjoin her ruling that assisted suicide is a right under the Montana Constitution while an appeal moves forward. Thus, assisted suicide is now legal in Montana through judicial fiat. Meanwhile in Oregon, assisted suicide is being offered as the only cost-effective medical treatment in circumstances determined solely by administrators of the Oregon Health Plan. Two cancer patients were denied treatments that would have helped extend their lives. In one case the decision was reversed, but in the other case, the patient eventually got the drug only after its producer offered to provide it pro bono. In Ohio, where assisted suicide is still illegal, an experimental treatment has led to a push to agree to assisted suicide in case the treatment fails. Would you be willing to sign a paper saying that if your surgeon fails to get good results, youll accept assisted suicide? In December, a woman in Cincinnati, Ohio, needed a very experimental face transplant. Her doctor would actually be grafting the face of a dead person on to hers. However, the hospital was afraid that if the operation did not work, the woman would die a slow death. A bioethicist suggested that she sign a form agreeing to an assisted suicide - just in case. How long will it be before this just in case option is routinely offered with more common operations? Jane St Clair makes the following observation regarding the votes in Oregon and Washington state to allow assisted suicide: People vote in favor of assisted suicide laws because they think they are giving themselves a new right - a right to a dignified death. They dont realize they are giving insurance companies and doctors new rights too. They think in terms of assisted suicide as something they can do at the very end of life to make their deaths more comfortable. They dont realize that they have created a new form of medical treatment. And yes, its already here. Bill Beckman
Presidents Report: President Bushs legacy and what to expect from the Obama administration Only two days into his new administration Obama began to implement his abortion agenda with an executive order reversing the Mexico City policy, a rule first implemented by Ronald Reagan, which forbade the U.S. government from sending money to overseas family-planning organizations that perform abortions or offer abortion counseling. The ban, which was lifted when Bill Clinton took office, was later re-established by George W. Bush in 2001. This is only the start of Obamas abortion agenda and it came one day after the largest annual March for Life on the 36th anniversary of the legalization of abortion. According to a new gallop poll, fifty-eight percent of Americans said they disagreed with the presidents decision to give funding to overseas family planning organizations that provide abortions; only thirty-five percent supported it. Thats encouraging. Americans dont want to fund abortion overseas. While you may not agree with everything that George W. Bush did, he was the most pro-life president and his dedication to life will be absent in the oval office and it will be devastating for the unborn around the world. Bush had several significant victories for life and all of them may be overturned by Obama. President Bushs accomplishments include the partial-birth abortion ban, the unborn victims of violence act, the Mexico-city policy, the veto of the embryonic stem cell bill, conscience protection regulations by HHS, etc. As Deal Hudson notes in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com, there was a marked drop in abortions between 2000 and 2006, and this can be seen as a tribute to Bush because as a leader of the nation he said that life is precious. Obamas first action reversing the Mexico City policy can be seen as a sign of where things are headed. He moved quickly to reassure his pro-abortion supporters. Obamas order will result in funds directed to groups such as International Planned Parenthood which are committed to abortion as a form of birth control. Many voters were unaware of Obamas view of abortion. This first action only two days into his presidency clearly shows his pro-abortion stance. Its only a start and cannot be ignored. Other expected items include increased funding to Title X (which funds Planned Parenthood), ending abstinence-only education, abortion at taxpayers expense, passing the Freedom of Choice Act, and appointing only pro-choice people to the Federal judiciary. He will try to repeal the Hyde Admendment, which would result in tax funded abortion as a birth control method and a means of population control. While Congress is pretty busy these days, the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) may be next. It would outlaw all of the existing restrictions on abortion and deny states the right to enact regulations on abortions. All of the work done to enact restrictions on abortions would be overturned. While the American people are more and more opposed to abortion, President Obama will ignore popular opinion on abortion and continue with his agenda. This is a time for us to not lose hope. We must continue to work to change hearts as well as laws. We must encourage people who work to defend life, whether its a vote by a politician, or a neighbor who peacefully prays outside an abortion clinic, or a Pro-Life sermon by a priest or pastor, or a public statement by a bishop. These people need our prayers and public support. We must continue to speak up and educate people. Let your politicians know that you expect them to defend life. Participate in petitions against FOCA and abortion funding. While America moves from the most pro-life president to the most pro-abortion president, we must view Bushs legacy as building the foundation of a pro-life nation. The battle will be hard, but we must continue our fight for life and build up that foundation built by President Bush. Rosemary Hackett
Deceptive Agenda of the Prevention First Act The title sounds so good. How could prevention first be a negative thing? Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is the lead sponsor of S. 21, called the Prevention First Act. What will be prevented and how much will it cost? As usual, the claimed intent is to prevent unwanted pregnancies. How might the provisions of S. 21 achieve such a result? First, the bill would prohibit health insurance plans from excluding coverage for birth control drugs and devices. Even people who do not want or need such coverage would be forced to pay for it. Hospitals that receive any Federal funds would be forced to dispence the morning-after pill (Plan B), which can sometimes cause an abortion, to women who indicate they have been raped. This provision would force hospitals opposed to abortion to become involved in practicing at least one form of abortion. Will such a requirement really help women who have been raped? Why does S. 21 promote use of the drug for women who have been victims of sexual assault without providing them with tangible help? Though the bill requires offering Plan B, it has no reporting requirement in place for young girls who may have been victims of abuse or rape. Planned Parenthood, the nations largest abortion business and the likely recipient of the bulk of the funding, praised the introduction of the bill in a press release. S. 21s provisions for expansion of Medicaid funding for family planning services and to award grants for teenage pregnancy prevention programs and teenage pregnancy prevention research put dollar signs in the eyes of Planned Parenthoods leaders. Planned Parenthood certainly has no interest in truly helping young women who have been sexually assaulted, as demonstrated by their consistent failure to comply with mandated reporting and parental involvement laws. How can Planned Parenthoods ongoing encouragement of casual sex prevent teen pregnancy? Such grants would amount to giving them more money to solve the problems they are creating. With no accountability for results, their Federal funding just keeps rising. Let Senators Durbin and Burris know your position on S. 21, and contact your Representative about the equivalent House bill (H.R. 463). Tell them to support a bill that will really help women, called the Pregnant Women Support Act (S. 270). While this bill may not reduce unwanted pregnancies, it will reduce abortions by offering real support and choices to those mothers. The Pregnant Women Support Act would support women with provisions that include: Establishing a toll-free number to direct women to places that will provide support during and following their pregnancy; Providing child care to low income and student parents; Providing parenting education in maternity group homes; Making the Adoption Tax Credits permanent; Ensuring that pregnant women are not denied health care by insurance companies and that coverage is continued for newborns; Codifying the regulation that extends coverage under the State Childrens Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to low-income pregnant women and unborn children; Increasing funding for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program; Providing grants to institutions of higher education to fund pregnant and parenting student services. Videos Show Planned Parenthood Violating the Law Planned Parenthood encourages teenagers to continue having sex with their boyfriends, even when they know it is statutory rape of a teen by an older man. Recently released videos have revealed the actions of Planned Parenthood employees in Indiana, North Carolina, and Arizona. Employees with Planned Parenthood of Indiana were caught violating the law in both Bloomington and Indianapolis. One video shows how Planned Parenthood in Indianapolis ignored mandated reporting laws and encouraged a young teenager to get an abortion. Two employees there evaded their legal responsibility to report the statutory rape of young girls. Another video shows a Planned Parenthood employee in Bloomington encouraging a 13-year-old to lie about the age of her boyfriend and get an abortion in Illinois to avoid Indianas parental notice law. Lila Rose, a UCLA student journalist who organized this effort, said that the recent footage is only a sample from many hours of footage she collected in the undercover audit conducted over the summer. Similar efforts by Lila in 2007 led to Planned Parenthood Los Angeles threatening a lawsuit against her. That threat did not prevent Lila from continuing her efforts to reveal how frequently Planned Parenthood breaks the mandated reporting laws, making her into the latest Pro-Life hero. Eventually, the Bloomington employee was fired. That firing may reveal that Planned Parenthood feels vulnerable. In 2005, they managed to get a judicial ruling on appeal that prevented Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter from obtaining medical records of underage girls to investigate whether Planned Parenthood was complying with the law. Apparently, that experience did not motivate Planned Parenthood to change their behavior, even though they claim that such actions violate their policies. How many occurrences must be found before a clear pattern of unlawful behavior is established, especially when you consider the cases revealed in other states besides Indiana? Enough smoke has been generated to motivate Attorney General Steve Carter to open a new investigation. Now if the judges will stop covering for Planned Parenthood so the investigation can proceed, maybe Carter can build a criminal case against Planned Parenthood and bring them to justice.
A Movie that Saves Babies from Abortion Hopefully, you have seen the very heart-warming movie Bella that is now available on DVD. Recently, Breakpoint.org posted a commentary with exciting news about the impact of Bella. To date, the producers of the film are aware of some 40 babies whose mothers were contemplating abortion, but who decided to keep their children as a result of seeing the film. Mark Earley briefly covered the moving stories of how babies were saved from the beginning of the movies development. He reported how the first baby was saved by lead actor Eduardo Verastegui during his preparation for the film. That baby boy is named Eduardo. Another baby was saved by Eduardo during the pre-screenings of the movie. That baby girl is named Bella. Giving another specific example, Earley stated, Even the films lead actress, Tammy Blanchard, who played Nina, found life imitating art. Before the films release, she found herself pregnant. Prior to the making of Bella, she says that she never wanted to have children. She thought it was pointless. But making the film changed her mind. And in December 2007, Tammy gave birth to a baby girl, Ava Jean. Author Tim Drake has written a book about the movie called Behind Bella. Some people have been motivated to donate copies of this book and the movie itself to pregnancy care centers so this story can help save even more babies.
Teens who abstain from sex share eight personality and behavioral traits While efforts to ban abstinence education from schools continue, positive results from abstinence were recently covered in U.S. News & World Report. According to government-supported research at the Heritage Foundation (called the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health), abstinent teens are far more likely to attend and graduate from college than those who are sexually active. Teens who abstain from sex share eight personality and behavioral traits, as follows: Future
orientation, with a focus on long-term goals One might conclude that abstinence helps produce life-affirming choices that make a positive difference both short term and long term. Only in a culture where self-destructive behavior is considered freedom can such results be ignored in favor of travesties like comprehensive sex education, morning-after pills, reproductive choice, and other politically correct mis-guidance of young people. The battle is truly between a culture of life and a culture of death.
Prenatal Diagnosis Often Fatal Statistics reveal that prenatal diagnosis has led parents to abort as many as 90% of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome. That percentage is similar for children pre-natally diagnosed with other conditions such as spina bifida, cystic fibrosis and dwarfism. In a rare show of cooperation last year Congress passed the Pre-natally and Post-natally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act, and President George W. Bush signed it into law. This bill requires giving families who receive a diagnosis of Down syndrome or any other condition, either pre-natally or up until a year after birth, pertinent helpful information. The information would include facts about the condition and connections to support services and networks that could offer assistance in raising a disabled child. Features include expansion and further development of a national clearinghouse on information for parents of children with disabilities, expansion of national and local peer-support programs, and the creation of a national registry of families willing to adopt children with pre- or post-natally diagnosed conditions. Sarah Palins decision not to abort her son Trig after a diagnosis of Down syndrome also raised more awareness of the need to value children with disabilities, rather than aborting them. However, the medical profession often encourages abortion. Dr. Andre Lalonde, executive vice-president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, told a Canadian newspaper Palins decision to keep her baby, knowing he would be born with the condition, may inadvertently influence other women who may lack the necessary emotional and financial support to do the same. Part of the reason they lack the support is because of attitudes like his.
