Character Assassination of Pro-Lifers

On January 22, 2002, at the March for Life in Washington, D.C. well over 100,000 Pro-Life citizens showed their concern about the dangerous lack of respect for life that has developed in our nation over the last 29 years since the Supreme Court legalized abortion. As often happens, this large peaceful rally and march got very limited coverage in the nation’s media. By not covering the March for Life, the media reveals their bias against the Pro-Life message since they do not consider it newsworthy. Even so, the significance of these large annual Pro-Life events for 29 years running will not be lost. Truth cannot remain hidden, especially when the message is consistently carried forth by so many good people.

However, this year there is additional significance to the lack of media coverage of the March for Life. Since September 11th, abortion supporters have conducted an ongoing and increasingly bold campaign to label Pro-Life citizens as the equivalent of the Taliban. Failure to cover actual Pro-Life events allows these negative images of Pro-Lifers to take hold in the nation’s population. Who creates these images? Newsweek columnist Anna Quindlen wrote an article entitled “The Terrorists Here at Home” that appeared in the 12/17/01 issue. Guess who she was referring to! The January 6, 2002 episode of “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” portrayed the murder of an abortionist by a person who was shown to have interacted with numerous Pro-Life supporters. They were the “leads” who were interviewed by detectives as the murder investigation unfolded.

The media’s willingness to label an escaped convict (Clayton Waagner) as Pro-Life because he threatened to kill abortion clinic workers again misrepresents the values of Pro-Life citizens. Never mind that no legitimate Pro-Life group has ever seen Waagner at a meeting, had him on a member list, or did anything other than condemn his actions. This attempt to label Pro-Lifers as terrorists began with Gloria Feldt, Planned Parenthood Federation of America president. She said, “We at Planned Parenthood have lived and worked for many years with the threat of terrorism. Sadly, this is now a bond we share with the entire nation.” What an insult to the families of those lost on September 11th!

Watch for media bias against Pro-Life citizens. When you notice biased reports, call, write, or e-mail the offending media outlet.
